For tradespeople
How becoming a provider works
Before you spend ten minutes on this, here's exactly what we check, what we'll ask you for, and what happens next — no surprises halfway through.
What we check, and why
We check what the law actually requires for your trade. Most platforms don't check any of it — you just sign up and you're listed. We follow UK government guidance and check what the law requires for each trade before you can go live.
To be clear: we aren't government approved, endorsed, accredited or licensed by anyone — nobody who does this is. What we do is check the same public registers a careful customer would check themselves, so they don't have to.
Gas Safe registration is a legal requirement for all gas and boiler work in the UK.
Part P competent person scheme membership is required for notifiable electrical work in England and Wales.
Upper tier EA waste carrier registration is a legal requirement. Your customer faces a £600 fixed penalty if waste is fly-tipped by an unregistered carrier — even though they paid in good faith.
Since January 2026 self-employed tutors can apply for Enhanced DBS with Barred List checks directly via an umbrella body. For one-to-one tuition in students' homes this is the established protection standard.
What you'll need to hand
- Photo ID
- Proof of address
- Insurance, if you have it
- Two references
- Your National Insurance number, or company details
What else we need depends on your trade, and we'll tell you exactly what applies to you once you've told us what you do.
How long it takes
About ten minutes if you've got your documents to hand. Longer if your trade needs certificates and you have to go and find them — and you can stop and come back whenever you like, we'll keep your place.
What happens after
You'll hear from us within 24 hours — most providers get approved the same day. We'll email you the moment you're live.
A few things we'll actually ask you
No sensitive question gets asked without the reason coming first. Here's the tone of it, before you start:
Why do you need my mobile number?
This is how we reach you when a job comes in — a text, usually. Customers never see it. They message you through SigeByte, so your number stays yours.
Why do you need photo ID?
Every provider on SigeByte is identity-checked, no exceptions. It's the single biggest thing that makes customers comfortable letting someone into their home, and it protects you too — it means nobody can trade under your name. Stored securely, never shown to customers.
Why do you need my National Insurance number?
This one's the law rather than us. From 2024, platforms like SigeByte have to report what self-employed people earn through them to HMRC, the same way an employer would. So we need your NI number to do that properly. It's encrypted, it's never shown to anyone, and it never appears on your profile or in any message. It's only ever used for the annual report to HMRC.
Why do you ask for my Google Business Profile?
Optional, and I'll be straight with you about why I'm asking. We never show this on your profile, and we never send customers to it — that would just be sending your customers away from us and yours to Google. What we do with it is the other direction: when you finish a job well, we can invite that customer to leave you a review on your own Google page. Your reviews, your business, building your name — not ours.
Anything else?
Talk to us. Email providers@sigebyte.co.uk and a real person will answer — you don't need to have started your application first.
